AFFIRM Relationships project

Aiming to better our understanding of well-being during gender affirming hormone treatment, the AFFIRM Relationships project will examine how trans people feel after starting on gender affirming hormones, and how they feel in their relationships with others.

Hormone therapy is, for many trans people, an essential part of transitioning. In the AFFIRM Relationships project, we recognize the importance of having access to gender-affirming hormone treatment (GAHT). In this study, we hope to gain more insight into the changes people experience after being on gender-affirming hormones to improve the quality of this treatment option.

In addition to medical interventions, relationships with others including those with family, friends and romantic partners can also influence how we feel day to day. This may be particularly important during gender transition and hormone therapy, a time when the need for support from others is high. It is possible that some relationships could change after starting GAHT, but so far there is little scientific knowledge on the effect of these hormones on social life and social well-being.
